In 1995, when we first took hold of our historic Gastown brewpub location, we discovered that the building had a rare steam heat system. A remnant from forward thinkers of a century past.
Our brewmaster had only read of steam powered brewing, but had never seen a functional steam brewery. These are very rare indeed. We ventured forth, experimented, and created a one-of-a-kind steam generated brewery. The only one in Canada.
To our pleasure, we found our test brews to be distinctively fresh and flavourful.
For nearly 20 years, beer aficionados have been migrating to our SteamWorks brewpub for a taste of these unconventional beers. Now, with the advent of our bottled beers, you can take the brewpub experience home with you.

Proud Winner for the Second Year in a Row!

This northwest style pale ale is a confident beer with citrussy character, balanced with layers of malty goodness.

An homage to the original Pilsners of the Czech Republic. This full bodied beer has a spicy, herbal finish with hints of lemon. Prosst!

A new brewery in Burnaby, slated to open July 1, will massively expand production of bottles and cans for the retail market and kegs for other pubs, according to Steamworks president Walter Cosman. Steamworks has been producing bottles under contract at Langley’s Dead Frog Brewing while the new brewery is being built.

‘Tis the season for festive beers, and more specifically the highly anticipated Steamworks ‘Blitzen’ ale. Steamworks Brewing Company will warm the hearts of craft beer lovers across British Columbia with the first ever release of Blitzen Winter Ale in 650ml bottles.
Blitzen, an ode to Belgian Tripel, is a richly brewed winter ale with apple and citrus aromas, a toasted malt character and a creamy finish – enough to make any beer drinker sing with holiday cheer. And, in the season of giving, Blitzen makes a clever stocking stuffer or a perfect offering at your next Christmas party or holiday dinner. Aptly named after the lightning fast reindeer, Blitzen’s bottle is designed to delight with a holiday-inspired theme. Every bottle depicts the steam-driven reindeer bursting out of Vancouver’s Science World, ingeniously reimagined as a steampunk snow globe.
“Blitzen ale is 9% alcohol, so you should definitely arrange a designated sleigh-driver to get you home safe and sound!”
Whether you’ve been naughty or nice, Steamworks’ festive Blitzen Winter Ale is available in B.C. Government Liquor Stores as well as private licensed retail stores, allowing beer aficionados province-wide to put the “happy” in holidays.
By Randy Shore of the Vancouver Sun:
Steamworks Pale Ale – This beer is neither new nor seasonal but it only recently became available in bottles. I have enjoyed Steamworks beer for many many (many) years on tap. I am overjoyed to report that the Pale Ale makes the transition to bottle seamlessly. In fact, it immediately becomes on of the top three B.C. pale ales available in bottle. The firm caramelly malt backbone supports a punchy northwest Cascade hop with a citrus note. I really like this beer. Read More....

Outgoing Steamworks brewmaster Conrad Gmoser was at the ceremony at Chapel Arts in the Downtown Eastside to collect the prize for a second consecutive year, an incredible achievement for a lager beer in the ale-dominated B.C. craft beer scene. Read More.....

On Thursday, September 20th Steamworks Brewpub held their official bottled beer launch party. The brewpub has been brewing their own beer for seventeen years and for those who have been able to try it, know that it’s pretty good stuff. Situated just to the East of Waterfront Station, Steamworks has been a great spot to sit and have a beer since it’s inception.
Showcased at the event were the six beers that they will be packaging in either a 6-pack consisting of 355 ml bottles or single bomber style bottles that are 650 ml size. Each beer was paired with an appetizer sized dish that went perfectly with their respective beers.

Steamworks Brewing Co. owner Eli Gershkovitch announced August 27 that his 17-year-old brewing pub is going to start bottling its beer, which until now has only been available on tap at its Water Street location.
The news comes months after Gershkovitch scooped longtime Granville Island Brewing general manager Walter Cosman to be his company’s president. Small “craft” brewers have been making a dent in overall beer sales in B.C. The latest British Columbia Liquor Distribution Branch quarterly report notes that brewers whose annual packaged production is less than 16 million litres saw a 10.08% sales jump in the three months that ended June 30. During those same three months, brewers whose annual packaged production exceeded 16 million litres saw a sales drop of 8.72%.
From the Gastown area of Vancouver Steamworks Brewing comes their “Wheat Ale” known as “Ipanema Summer White” if you go to the pub. This is one of their first bottles of beer that has been botteled as they are looking to expand. The beer pours a straw yellow colour that is very cloudy with a white head. The beer smells heavily of wheat, yeast and citrus. The flavor is of wheat bread, yeast and citrus. This beer is very smooth and comes in at a IBU of 8. I am happy to now be able to consume this beer outside of the bar that is it brewed at! They Brought in the Artists that do the bottle art for the Winery Blasted Church as well to design really distinctly Vancouver Bottles!

Using a select yeast strain that produces complex fruity and spicy flavours that are balanced with prominent hop bitterness and a soft malt character.
Belgian Farmhouse Ale brewed with German Pilsner and Wheat malts, finished with Styrian and First Gold hops. Lots of bright orange and lemon zest with some herbal qualities. A special yeast strain adds apricot notes as well as a hint of clove. Finishes dry, with a hint of sweetness at the end.

Curl up closer to the steam pipes, and warm up to the festive season. This Winter Ale is an ode to Belgian Tripel. It shows apple, and citrus aromas, along with a toasted malt character.
